London Area Guide - Central London

The Central London area encompasses such world famous landmarks as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the London Eye, Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square. With 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 150 ancient monuments and over 600 music performances each week, you’d be forgiven for forgetting the meaning of ‘bored’! In choosing a place to live it is worth considering your own preferences. Features in this guide are useful for when taking into account individual priorities:

When working in the city, consider Canary Wharf, Wapping or Westminster for ease of access. Alternatively be sure to stay close to the Central or Jubilee tube lines and for enjoyment of open spaces, Notting Hill, Kensington and Holland Park are all within walking distance of Hyde Park and nearby Regents Park. A preference for modern buildings with porters and lifts? These can be found in most areas, but for a wide range of prices and styles try St John’s Wood, Maida Vale, Bayswater and Regents Park. For a more picturesque, riverside location, browse the waters of Little Venice, south Chelsea or Pimlico. There are a range of period buildings or modern purpose-built developments along the River Thames.


Paddington is 15 minutes away from Heathrow airport so Central London provides easy access to the rest of the World! There are several museums in the area, take an enlightening trip to South Kensington and Knightsbridge which are home to the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, or exercise your cultural muscles visiting the many galleries to be found throughout west and central London, particularly in Kensington Church Street, Soho and Chelsea. Visit the world famous London Zoo and find yourself at its entertaining bird show, or feeding the penguins!

Central London also plays host to a number of educational institutions, training and inspiring the great minds of tomorrow. Regents Park and Marylebone are home to University of Central London and London Business School, to name a few.


Central London could arguably be called the fashion capital of the world, and this is reflected in the extensive number of outlets, malls and streets packed with every imaginable kind of product. For the finest brand name goods, check out Chelsea, Knightsbridge or Kensington High Street for specialist shops and larger department stores. Harrods of Knightsbridge has been serving the rich, famous and royalty for over 160 years! Take a browse around London’s famous markets, with Portobello Road drawing tourists seven days a week and quirky boutiques litter Brick Lane for fabulous vintage bargains. For fashion fans, take your pick from Oxford Street, Soho and Covent Garden for well-known stores and nearby Westbourne Grove offers bargains or many famous brands. Luxury (or just window shopping!) can be found around King’s Road and Sloane Square in Chelsea, or Carnaby Street and Liberty Department store in Soho have long been the places to pick up quality items.


With the Congestion Charge applying to the centre of London, the most popular method of transport would probably be either tube, rail or bike! However, central London allows easy access to outer London areas by a number of major routes, the M25, A4 for the west, or the A5 towards the M1 and north of England and Scotland . A parking space can add £40 - £80 per week to your rent, or consider registering for a local parking permit which allows you to park on the road for a fixed annual sum. The price varies depend on the local council. Cycle lanes and paths criss-cross the city, there are extensive networks through the many parks, and cyclists can also use Bus Lanes throughout London.

Tube /Rail

Tube access across Central London is excellent – most areas can be reached directly and easily within 20 minutes. Popular routes for commuting to the centre and to the east of London include Central, Jubilee and Circle lines. Central London is situated mainly within Zone 1, with some popular residential areas stretching into Zone 2 such as St John’s Wood, Maida Vale, Holland Park and Hampstead Heath.
